CARDINAL JOHN TONG RETIRING AND
MOST REV. MICHAEL YEUNG SUCCEEDING AS BISHOP OF HONG KONG

 

In June 2014, on receiving the request of Cardinal John TONG to resign as Bishop of Hong Kong on the ground of reaching the retirement age of seventy-five (cf. Canon 401§1), Pope FRANCIS decided that the Cardinal was to remain in office for three more years. With the three-year term coming to a close, Pope Francis has disposed that with effect from today, i.e., 1 August 2017, Cardinal John TONG will retire and the Most Reverend Michael YEUNG Ming-cheung, Coadjutor, is to succeed him as diocesan Bishop in accordance with Canon 409§1.

 

The personnel of the Diocesan Curia will for the time being remain unchanged until further notice.

 

Bishop Michael Yeung will meet with the media on 2 August, 2017 (Wednesday) at 3:00p.m. at the Catholic Diocese Centre, 4/F, 16 Caine Road, Hong Kong.

 

To mark the commencement of the ministry of Bishop Michael YEUNG as Bishop of Hong Kong, a Eucharistic celebration will be held on 5 August 2017 (Saturday) at 3:00p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, to be officiated by Bishop YEUNG himself. This will be followed by a tea party at the Caritas Community Hall, 5/F, Caritas House, Caine Road. (Note: No parking spaces will be available for participants at Cathedral compound.)

 

Bishop Michael YEUNG will meet with the community leaders of Hong Kong at a cocktail reception to be held on 7 August 2017 (Monday) at 5:00p.m. at the Caritas Community Hall, 5/F, Caritas House, Caine Road. (Note: Attendance by invitation. No parking spaces will be available for guests outside Caritas House.)
