Appeal from Bishop Tong for Caritas-Hong Kong’s annual fund-raising drive: Give Them a Ray of Hope

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Every year I make an appeal for your support of and participation in the Caritas Fund Raising Campaign. Some people might take this campaign as simply a routine annual activity. But I would like to take this opportunity to tell you that your kindheartedness and sincerity in supporting the campaign is a seed full of life, a blessing that can benefit thousands of people!

The miracle of Five Loaves and Two Fish, recorded in the Gospel of St. Matthew (Chapter 14: 13–21), has given us a very important revelation. Jesus did not send away the people as his disciples suggested. On the contrary, he had compassion on the crowd and asked the disciples to give them food.

Jesus did not perform the miracle all by himself, single-handedly. On this occasion, he asked for contributions from the people surrounding him. This miracle teaches us that when we follow the will of Jesus, what may appear to be inadequate or insufficient, will turn out to be ample and plentiful.

Please also understand that food for life is not confined to material provisions. By the same token, we can believe that even just a tiny contribution from us, is, in fact, a big helping hand to a lot of people in need.

The annual Caritas Fund Raising Campaign is about to begin. As a result of your participation and support, all the events held can stand the test of time. No matter how much or how little you have donated, how many gift items you have given, or how much time you have spent, or the effort you have made, each and every bit is precious and valuable.

When we are willing to share what we have, our Heavenly Father will help us to put together the power and strength that makes a difference.

In the face of the worldwide financial crisis, the future is full of challenges. Love and Hope are two essential elements on which a harmonious society can be built. Through the professional and experienced teams at Caritas, we can understand the need of our neighbours and help the weak and the underprivileged.

With a compassionate heart for the poor and the disadvantaged, may your generosity and good deeds be put to work with Caritas and live out the spirit of the Five Loaves and Two Fish.

I thank you all most sincerely for your effort and your commitment to our needy brothers and sisters, the children of God and members of the Body of Christ. May the Lord, who loves a cheerful giver, reward you abundantly (2 Corinthians 9:7).

With my blessing and prayers,

+JOHN TONG
