簡介Marriage between cousins remains rampant in much of the Muslim world. And the results are truly tragic. About 40 percent of the population marries a cousin in Egypt, according to a 2016 report in The Economist, while the percentage in Jordan is 32 percent. There are at least two reasons inbreeding is so common in parts of the Muslim world (in addition to ignorance of its link to genetic defects): tradition and religion.

簡介Many liberal democracies are facing a social crisis today because their governments pursued policies which undermined the family. But since 2010, one country has seen marriage rates increase by a whopping 43 per cent with their divorce rate dropping by 22.5 per cent. Unsurprisingly, with the increase in marriage, 33 per cent fewer women are having abortions today than they were eight years ago. Likewise the national birth rate is currently at its highest in 20 years. The country is Hungary.

簡介On June 9, 2016, the European Court of Human Rights delivered its decision on the case of Chapin and Charpentier v. France (n°40183/07). It questioned the French courts’ decision to annul the “marriage of Bègles” contracted in 2004 between two men, in violation of French law. By this decision, the European Court of Human Rights unanimously recalled that the European Convention on Human Rights does not include the right to marriage for homosexual couples, neither under the right to respect for private and family life (art. 8) nor the right to marry and to found a family (art. 12).

簡介A Christian student has been removed from a university social work course after he made comments on his personal Facebook page in support of biblical teaching on marriage and sexual ethics. Mr. Ngole was told that, by posting his comments on Facebook, the Committee believed that he “may have caused offence to some individuals” and had “transgressed boundaries which are not deemed appropriate for someone entering the Social Work profession.” His action would have an effect on his “ability to carry out a role as a Social Worker,” the Committee said. Mr. Ngole is appealing the decision and is being supported by the Christian Legal Centre. If the decision is not overturned, it could prevent Mr. Ngole from pursuing his vocation in social work.

簡介The Appellant is a post-operative male-to-female transsexual person who has undergone sex reassignment surgery (“SRS”) at hospitals managed by the Hospital Authority in Hong Kong. She and her male partner wish to get married but the Respondent refused to celebrate their marriage, deciding that she does not qualify as “a woman” under the Marriage Ordinance (“MO”) and the Matrimonial Causes Ordinance (“MCO”). The Appellant brought judicial review proceedings to challenge that decision, contending that she ought in law to count as a woman for the purposes of marriage.

簡介The word “marriage” derives from Middle English mariage, which first appears in 1250–1300 CE. This, in turn, is derived from Old French, marier (to marry), and ultimately Latin, marītāre, meaning to provide with a husband or wife and marītāri meaning to get married. The adjective marīt-us -a, -um meaning matrimonial or nuptial could also be used in the masculine form as a noun for “husband” and in the feminine form for “wife”.The related word “matrimony” derives from the Old French word matremoine, which appears around 1300 CE and ultimately derives from Latin mātrimōnium, which combines the two concepts: mater meaning “mother” and the suffix -monium signifying “action, state, or condition”.
