| 簡介 | If current trends continue, the number of girls who marry as children will reach nearly one billion by 2030. That’s according to the UN, which launched an initiative earlier this year to protect girls from child marriage. Girls who marry as children are less likely to achieve their full potential. They are more likely to leave education early, suffer domestic violence, contract HIV/AIDS and die due to complications during pregnancy and childbirth – their bodies simply aren’t ready. |

| 簡介 | Police in Pakistan arrested a 60 year old man who was about to marry a 9 year old girl in contravention of the new laws that protect minors in that country. We do not know whether or not she had experienced puberty. That is not the point. She is a child, and either “marrying” her or conducting sexual relations with her is a crime. Despite the prevalence of Sharia Law in that land, the fact that the prophet is said to have married his favourite wife, Aisha, at age 6 and deflowered her at age 9 is not enough to save adult men who marry children in enlightened modern nations, including some majority Muslim ones, or countries with large Muslim populations. |
