PRELATURE OF THE HOLY CROSS AND OPUS DEI

Founded in Spain in 1928 by St. Josemaría Escrivá; in Hong Kong since 1981.

The faithful of Opus Dei seek sanctity in the context of ordinary life, through their daily occupations, spreading everywhere the universal call to holiness and apostolate.

Since 1982, Opus Dei has been a personal prelature of the Catholic Church. Personal prelatures exist to carry out specific pastoral missions in the Church. They have a prelate (appointed by the Roman Pontiff), secular priests, and men and women lay faithful, united as a single organism to carry out the prelature’s mission.

In Opus Dei’s case, this mission is, as mentioned above, to spread the ideal of holiness in the middle of the world. In order to carry out this mission, Opus Dei offers spiritual formation to its members and to anyone else wanting to deepen their faith. It organizes classes, conferences, retreats, days of recollection and provides spiritual accompaniment, etc., planned in such a way that people can combine them with a busy work schedule and family life. It seeks to serve the diocese, to which the faithful of the Prelature fully belong.

Attached to the Prelature is the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross, which includes diocesan priests who remain incardinated and work in their own diocese, while they are provided with spiritual assistance in order to be more united with their bishop and seek sanctity in the exercise of their priestly ministry.
