SOCIETY OF THE DIVINE WORD (SVD)

SVD was founded in 1875 at Steyl, Limburg, Holland. The present General Motherhouse is in Rome. In 1879, St. Josef Freinademetz, the first missionary of the SVD was sent to China. He first studied Chinese in Hong Kong where he also served two years in Yim Tin Tsai. Then he moved to Shangdong. SVD officially opened the mission in Hong Kong in 1948. Our mission is to promote the four characteristic dimensions: The Bible, Mission Animation, Communication, Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation (JPIC), especially among non-Christians. Our apostolate also engages in education and serving migrants.
