CHANCERY NOTICE

SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR CHILDREN TO COMPLETE PROCESS OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION IN VIEW OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Our Sunday Schools have been closed over the past few months due to the Covid-19 outbreak, but their teachers have been trying in other ways to continue providing catechetical formation for children.  A portion of these children, having gone through a long catechetical preparation in the past, are in fact ready for receiving First Communion and Confirmation this year.  Therefore Cardinal John TONG, after due consultations with the Diocesan Catechetical Commission and the Diocesan Catechetical Centre, has decided that parishes should make appropriate arrangements for these children to receive the two sacraments during this year, so that they can complete the process of Christian Initiation without delay.  Shortly the Diocesan Catechetical Centre will be communicating to our parishes some recommended teaching material for children preparing for receiving First Communion and Confirmation.

The Cardinal also encourages Catholic parents and Sunday School teachers to closely collaborate in providing ongoing catechetical formation for children, pending the suspension of classes.

Given at the Chancery Office,

13 April 2020.
